Six people, including an Indian army colonel, his wife and their child, and three soldiers, were killed in a ‘sudden’ terrorist attack in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur.

They were ambushed by the terrorists on Saturday morning local time at Churachandpur district in Manipur, near the border with Myanmar, according to local media reports.

The deceased Indian army colonel was identified as Colonel Viplav Tripathy, the Commanding Officer of 46 Assam Rifles, who went to a forward camp on Saturday and was returning when his convoy was ambushed, NDTV reported, citing the local sources.

It is believed that the Manipur-based terrorist group People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is behind the attack, however, no group has claimed responsibility yet, NDTV also said.

The police sources told NDTV that the “intermittent firing” is going on.

This is the first time that civilians have died in an ambush in this remote area of the district, located in an extremely remote village more than 100 km north of state capital Imphal.

Confirming the death of the Army Colonel and his family, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said a counter-operation has been launched in the incident.

For decades, the army has been deployed to the border areas with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan but it has not been known to carry out cross-border raids. In 2015, 20 soldiers had been killed in an attack by terrorists in the state.
