10 Chhath Puja devotees killed in Assam road crash

10 Chhath devotees have been killed in a truck-autorickshaw collision in India’s northeastern state of Assam. The deceased were all autorickshaw passengers. They were killed in the accident when thier autorickshaw was hit by a truck while returning from a religious festival called Chhath Puja. The accident took place on the Assam-Tripura border area on Thursday, NDTV reported, citing the police sources.

According to media reports, the tragic accident took place at Patharkandi in Karimganj of Assam, on the way back from Chhath Puja. Nine people were killed on the spot after the accident. One died later at the hospital. Three of the dead at the spot were children. However, NDTV says the dead included three men, five women and two children.

Meanwhile, after receiving the news of the accident, the police reached the spot and recovered the bodies. They were later sent to the hospital for autopsy. Police have confiscated the autorickshaw that was crushed in the accident. However, the deadly truck could not be apprehended.

“After hitting the autorickshaw, the driver fled with the truck. The search for the accused driver is underway,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. 

Earlier on Wednesday, at least 12 people were killed in a tragic road accident in Rajasthan, another Indian state. A bus was passing by the Balotra area on Barmer-Jodhpur highway around 10 am on Wednesday. There were at least 25 passengers on the bus.

At that moment, an oil tanker coming from the opposite direction hit the bus at a high speed. The bus caught fire immediately. At least 12 people were burnt alive on the spot.
