According to the Friendship Day website, the concept of Friendship Day started with various card-making companies. Joyce Hall, the founder of the card-selling company ‘Hallmark’, took the initiative to observe this day. In 1919, it was he who proposed to observe Friends Day on the first Sunday of August.
Friends Day was officially celebrated in the United States in 1935. Then gradually people from different countries of the world accepted the day. Many countries celebrate Friends Day on their own preferred day.
In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared 30 July as the International Day of Friends. So, July 30 is internationally recognized as Friendship Day.
However, the first Sunday of August is considered Friend’s Day in different countries of the world including Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, and the United States.
How the day came: According to Wikipedia, in 1935, the American government killed a man. The day was the first Saturday in August. A friend of the man committed suicide the next day in protest. Since then, to honor the contribution of friends in various fields of life, the American Congress decided to celebrate the first Sunday of August as Friends Day in 1935. Since then, Friendship Day soon became very popular and became International Friendship Day.
There is another story - many believe that the horror, chaos, and violence of World War I created a lack of friendship among people. As a result, many people think that the idea of celebrating Friends Day in the state came.
It is also known that in 1919, on the first Sunday of August, friends used to exchange cards, flowers, and gifts among themselves. The Hallmark Card established by Joyce Hall in 1910 took the tradition of Friends Day a step further.
On July 20, 1958, the founder of ‘World Friendship Crusade’ Dr. Ramón Artemio Bracho made the proposal at a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay (a riverside town about 200 miles north of Asuncion, Paraguay). That same night, the organization was founded and sent a proposal to the United Nations to celebrate the International Day of Friendship on July 30. After almost 53 years, on July 27, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly designated July 30 as ‘World Friends Day’.
April 8 is celebrated as Friends Day in some countries.
