These pictures of Ira have sparked a lot of discussion on social media. Who is this Era? Why this picture? Who captured these pictures? What is the meaning behind these pictures?

Who is this Era?

Recently, some pictures of ballet dancing in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture of Dhaka University (DU) have been widely discussed on social media in Bangladesh.

The person in this viral photo is  Mubashshira Kamal Era, a daughter of Naogaon and a second-year student of Naogaon Government College. Era always loved dancing. She is dancing since 2017. In her childhood, she learned dancing from Sultan Mahmud in Naogaon. Later, she learned dancing from Bharatanatyam in Dhaka. Era is now working with Sadhona Songhoton since 2021.

Mubashshira Kamal Era came to Dhaka for a dance festival from January 20 to January 22. After the festival, she took pictures on January 23.

Who captured these pictures? Why these pictures?

The pictures of ballet dancer Mubashshira Kamal Era were captured by photographer Joyeeta Afrin Trisha, a freelance photographer and lives in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

On Tuesday (January 18) morning, Joyeeta took model Mubashshira Kamal Era to DU’s TSC for photography. She was thinking of capturing a different idea for her photography.

Joyeeta told the media that “she had the idea of working on a ballet theme in the streets of Dhaka for a long time”. Seeing the banners about the situation of the SUST movement in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture in the capital’s TSC, an idea came to her mind and thought it would be the “best picture” for current times.

What is the meaning behind these ballet dance pictures?

Many say that the pictures are showing “solidarity” with the student movement of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). But the real story behind the picture is different. When they went to take pictures, the student movement was not on their minds before. After visiting TSC, they saw placards of various movements running next to the Raju Memorial Sculpture.

Joyeeta Afrin Trisha thinks of doing a photoshoot there. Many have considered the images as symbols of the student movement. Attempts have been made to highlight the concept of ballet through pictures. Apart from TSC, they have plans to do photoshoots in different famous places in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, Mubashshira Kamal Era thinks of learning ballet dancing during the lockdown. About this, she said she did some work on this form during the COVID period. She also shared short videos on social media. Despite the response, the videos did not go viral.
