Indian Singer Lata Mangeshkar has tested positive for Covid-19 and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai.
The 92 years old singer was brought to Breach Candy Hospital early on Sunday morning and is under treatment in the intensive care unit, said Dr Pratit Samdhani, who is heading the team of experts treating Lata Mangeshkar.
She has Covid pneumonia, the doctor added.
Her niece writer Rachana Shah said, “It’s a mild case of Covid-19, but we thought of removing Didi (as Mangeshkar is addressed by her family, friends and legions of fans) to the ICU in view of her advanced age. She is recovering.”
“A team of best doctors is looking after her. Didi's countless admirers and friends are praying for her health and their prayers will surely be answered,” Shah added.
Citing sources, Times Of India reported that Lata Mangeshkar is on oxygen support and could remain in hospital for a few more days. She doesn’t need invasive ventilator support at the moment.
Earlier, the singer had been hospitalised in 2019 as well for a serious lung ailment and pneumonia.
Mangeshkar, who started singing at 13, has over 30,000 songs in several Indian languages to her name in an over seven-decade career.
Considered one of Indian cinema’s greatest singers, she received the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, in 2001. She is also the recipient of several other awards, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, and multiple National Film Awards. - Indian Express, TOI
