Age no barrier: 55yr-old Balayet takes entrance exam at DU

Belayet Sheikh, a 55-years-old man hailed from Mawna UP of Gazipur, dreamt of studying at the famous Dhaka University (DU), known as Oxford in the East, however, his dream did not fulfill due to various obstacles. He also tries to fulfill his dreams through his children, but he was also disappointed that they failed to fulfill his dream. This year, Belayet Sheikh sat for the admission test in the ‘Gha’ unit under the Faculty of Social Sciences for the 2021-2022 academic year. He gave exams in room no. 802 on the 8th floor of FM Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban in DU.

It is learned that Belayet Sheikh first prepared for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in 1983, but due to lack of money, he could not register at that time. In 1988, he again tried to take the SSC exam. However, he could not take the test due to the floods that year.

After starting his career, Belayet Sheikh decided not to study anymore. At one time, he tried to fulfill his dream through children, however, he also failed. Although his daughter got the chance to get admission to RAJUK Uttara Model College but was not interested in going to the college. Even his eldest son is not interested in studying.

Belayet Sheikh got disappointed that his children failed to fulfill his dream. Indomitable Belayet finally passed SSC in 2019 and HSC in 2021. Following this, at the age of 55, he took part in the DU admission test to fulfill his dream.

“Studying at DU is my cherished dream for many days. I couldn’t do it myself and also couldn’t do it with my children. As a result, I tried again,” Belayet Sheikh said, mentioning that it was his dream to study in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at DU 

His youngest son Sadeq Sheikh Jibon is staying outside the center for his father. “My father dreamt of educating brother and sister in DU, but they could not do it. So, the father is giving the test to sort out his regrets. I came with my father, he is giving the entrance test,” he said.
