Around 1.60 crore school-college students - from sixth to twelfth grade - across the country will be given a new unique ID or uniform ID card from January next year.

Confirming the matter, a source in the Ministry of Education said that students of some selected upazilas of the country will get the unique ID one month ahead of the scheduled time, i.e., in December on the occasion of the current Mujib Borsho.

According to the Ministry of Education, the government plans to give students unique IDs instead of roll numbers from this year. To this end, the officials of the “Integrated Educational Information. Management System (IEIMS) project” under the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) started collecting information from students. They instructed the parents to provide a total of 15 types of information including the birth registration of each student.

The source says it has been decided to give a unique ID number instead of the roll number to the students of class VI-to-XII. The students will be given a specific digit ID number as per the first letter of the spelling of their name.

About this, IEIMS project director Md. Manjurul Alam Pradhan said data entry to the software will start from next month at the school level to create unique IDs for students from pre-primary to fifth-grade class. Therefore, the work of building the software is in the final stage.

“All kinds of information about students whether they dropped out or not, did they get a job, etc. will be stored in the unique ID,” said Unique ID project director Shamsul Alam. Special measures have been taken to ensure that the information provided by the students in the form of Unique ID “does not fall into the hands of others” in any way.

He further said the process of filling the information form of Unique ID will end on November 30. Then data entry will be done. Data protection will have several levels of security.

We are hopeful that it will be possible to hand over the unique IDs to the students in phases at the beginning of next year. However, on the occasion of Mujib Borsho, we are planning to distribute unique IDs in some upazilas in December, Shamsul Alam added.
