Current Finance Secretary Abdur Rouf Talukder has been made the new Governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB).

Abdur Rouf Talukder’s appointment was made in a notification of the Central Bank branch of the Financial Institutions Division on Saturday. His appointment as governor will be effective from July 4.

Abdur Rouf Talukder will replace by Fazle Kabir at the end of the current Governor's term.

Abdur Rouf Talukder joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in February 1988 (BCS 1985 batch). In his long career, he has served in the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Food and Ministry of Information. He also served as the first secretary (commercial) of the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. On July 17, 2018, Rouf Talukder became the Finance Secretary.

Meanwhile, in 2016, former finance secretary Fazle Kabir was appointed as BB Governor for four years. As such, his term was supposed to end on March 19, 2020, but 34 days earlier, on February 16, 2020, the government extended his term for 3 months and 13 days. The government then said he would remain Governor until he turned 65.

Fazle Kabir turned 65 on July 3, 2020. Earlier in May, his term was extended for another two years.
