The Benapole Transport Agency Owners Association has announced an indefinite strike from Tuesday to protest the disruption of loading and unloading of goods due to lack of cranes and forklifts.

Azim Uddin Gazi, general secretary of the association, confirmed the information on Monday. Currently, three out of six cranes and 8 out of 10 forklifts are in operation in the port.

He said Benapole port does not have adequate cranes and forklifts for loading and unloading heavy goods. Most of these are obsolete for a long time. As a result, loading and unloading of goods have become almost impossible.

Calling the crane-forklift drivers incompetent, he said he had written a letter to Mamun Kabir Tarafdar, deputy director (traffic) of the land port, but he did not take cognizance of the matter.

Benapole Land Port Deputy Director (Traffic) Abdul Jalil said Black Bengal Enterprise, a crane and forklift supplier at Benapole Port, has been asked to provide new cranes and forklifts. "Hopefully, this problem will be solved soon".
