Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’ bank account information has been sought. Financial intelligence agency Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has written to the banks seeking information on Dr. Muhammad Yunus’ all bank accounts.

BFIU has sent letters to banks asking for information on all types of bank and credit card transactions of Dr. Yunus on Thursday.

In the letter, the former managing director (MD) of Grameen Bank has been asked to send any transaction record to BFIU by Tuesday. However, it was not clear behind the reason for seeking Yunus’ bank transaction information

According to a BFIU source, various organizations are asked to provide information on the bank transactions of the individual in case of investigation. However, no such organization has sought such information regarding Dr. Yunus. Bangladesh Bank has requested this information for their own needs.

It is learned earlier in 2016, Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) take information about the bank accounts of Yunus and his family members.

Dr. Yunus has been the MD of the Grameen Bank since its foundation in 1983. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 jointly with Grameen Bank. However, the government removed him from the post of MD in 2011 for exceeding the retirement age.

Yunus went to the High Court challenging the government’s decision but lost. At the time, lawmakers from various European countries, as well as then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, pressed the government to change its position in favor of Dr. Yunus.

Meanwhile, the leaked information of WikiLeaks shows that Dr. Yunus paid for the Clinton Foundation.
