A local court in Tangail today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for burning his wife to death after failing to get dowry of Tk1.5 lakh.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin pronounced the verdict in the presence of the accused on Tuesday afternoon.

Convicted Sujan Mia, 35, son of Abdus Salam of Adi Tangail area of ​​Tangail municipal town.

APP Mohammad Abdul Quddus of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal said Shiuli Akter of Adi Tangail Daspara in the municipality got married to Sujan about 14 years ago. After the marriage, Sujan used to torture Shiuli physically and mentally at different times for a dowry of Tk1.5 lakh.

On June 17, 2014, at around 11 am, Sujan closed the door of his house and beat Shiuli for dowry. Later he poured kerosene on her body and set it on fire. At that time, the people of the area came forward and rescued him and took him to Tangail Sadar Hospital. When her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Shiuli died on June 18. Later on the same day, Shiblu, brother of the deceased, filed a case with Tangail Sadar Police Station. The court gave the verdict after a long hearing.
