Rain starts in Sylhet, locals fear flood

It started raining again in Sylhet before the wounds of the catastrophic floods dried up. It has been raining intermittently and drizzling in different parts of Sylhet since Tuesday morning. This has again created fear among the locals of flood again. Water is also rising in some areas.
According to the Water Development Board, it is likely to rain in Sylhet in the next few days. If it rains in India, the hill slope will go down towards Sylhet. There is a possibility of rising water level again. However, the rains since Tuesday morning have not increased the water level in the rivers of the district but have reduced it a bit.
All the upazilas of Sylhet have been submerged in the floods for about two weeks. Although water has receded in Sylhet city and some areas, large areas of the district are still under water. There is still knee-deep water in houses in a few upazilas. The flood waters have started to subside in the last few days. However, hundreds of villages are still under water due to slow patch of water receding.
According to the Water Development Board, the water level at Kanaighat point of Surma river has decreased by 0.6 percent at 9 am on Tuesday as compared to 6 pm on Monday. That part of the river received 6 mm of rain between 6 pm on Monday and 9 am on Tuesday. The water level at Sylhet Point of the river has decreased by the same amount as on Monday. The water level at Sylhet Point was 10.71 cm till 9 am on Tuesday. Sylhet Point area received 8 mm of rain.
The danger level at Amalshid point of Kushiyara river is 15.40 cm where the water level was 16.85 cm till 6 pm on Monday and 16.64cm at 9 am on Tuesday. The water is flowing above 45cm of the danger level at Sheola Point. The water at that point was 13.50 cm. Water is flowing below the danger line at Sherpur point of the river. At the Fenchuganj point of the river, the water is flowing over1.4 cm above the danger level. At 9 am on Tuesday, the water was flowing at that point at 10.49 cm.
AKM Niloy Pasha, sub-divisional engineer, Sylhet Water Development Board, said rain is forecast for the next few days. It is not possible to say in advance whether the water will increase. But if it rains in India, the hill slope can go down in Sylhet. There is a possibility of floods again.
