Ferry service has been halted on Sattar Madbar Mangalmajhir Ghat in Shariatpur and Shimulia ghat in Munshiganj due to strong current in the Padma River.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) on Sunday announced the closure of ferry services on the Padma River due to strong currents.

BIWTC Shimulia Ghat Manager (Commerce) Faisal Ahmed confirmed the information around 10pm on Sunday (June 19).

He said that due to strong currents in the Padma, the ferry service has been declared closed on the Sattar Madbar Mangalmajhi in Shariatpur and Shimulia route of Munshiganj. When the current recedes, ferry traffic will resume.

Earlier in the morning, one person was killed and another was missing while 10 others injured in a head-on collision between two moving ferries on the Shimulia-Sattar Madbar Mangalmajhi Ghat route on the Padma River due to strong currents. The accident took place when Begum Rokeya and Begum Sufia Kamal ferries collided head-on at a turning point at Jajira end of Shariatpur.

Meanwhile, several districts of the country, including Sylhet and the northern region, were flooded. In the last 24 hours, water is flowing 4 cm above the danger level at Naria Sureshwar Padma river point in Shariatpur. As a result, the water level of Kirtinasha, Jayanti and Arialkhan rivers in the district has increased. Water has started entering the lower parts of the district.

The gauge reader (water meter) of the district water development board has confirmed the matter.
