One person was killed in a collision between two ferries on the Shimulia-Majhikandi route in Shariatpur. One person went missing and at least 20 people were injured in the incident.

The accident took place around 4:00 am on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Khokon, a pickup van driver. He was hailing from the Jhalokati district.

According to the drivers and passengers of the ferry, there was a strong current in the Padma river since last night. The ferry was moving despite the current. Two ferries named Begum Rokeya and Sufia Kamal collided head-on in the morning due to the strong current. The front of the two ferries twisted. A driver of a vehicle on the ferry was injured while another fell into the river.

Begum Rokeya Ferry's Master Mintu Ranjan Das said when we reached the turn near Jazira Point, we lost control due to the strong current and collided head-on with ferry Sufia Kamal. Eight to ten vehicles on my ferry were damaged and pickup van driver Mohammad Khokon was killed in the incident. Besides, one person is missing after falling into the river.

There are currently six ferries plying on the route. The crashed ferry had more than 50 vehicles and more than 200 passengers.
