AL`s candidate Rifat wins Cumilla city polls

Awami League-backed candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat was elected the new Mayor of the Cumilla City Corporation elections. He beat his nearest rival candidate Monirul Haque Sakku by 343 votes.

Returning Officer Shahedunnabi Chowdhury announced the name of the winning candidate after counting the votes tonight.

The Returning Officer said that election was held in a fair and impartial manner. Voters went to the center and peacefully voted for the preferred candidate.

Arfanul Haque Rifat got 50,310 votes in the election. His nearest rival candidate Monirul Haque Sakku got 49,967 votes.

Earlier, polling was held in 640 rooms of 105 centers of the city corporation from 8 am to 4pm. A total of 106 candidates contested for the post of councilor and 36 candidates for the post of reserved women councilor in the election.

There are 229,920 voters in the Cumilla City Corporation election. Of them, 117,092 are women, 112, 826 men and two are members of the third gender community.
