CoCC polls underway, queues getting longer

The voting for Comilla City Corporation (COCC) started from 8 am today, Wednesday (June 15) after a massive campaign.

The voters arrived at the polling booths an hour before the start of the polls to elect the candidate of their choice. As the day progresses, the queue of voters is getting longer.

Standing in the queue for voting at the JL Memorial Kindergarten Center in Ward No. 17 of the city, Cheru Mia of the Pathuriapara area said, “I came around 8 am and stood for an hour. I cast the first vote at 8 am.”

Presiding Officer Saiful Islam said there are 1595 voters in this center. All voters are men.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Chandan Chandra Das is in-charge of the security of the center. He said the situation has been normal since morning.

There are five mayoral candidates in the COCC polls; They are — Arfanul Haque Rifat of Awami League, Monirul Haque Sakku, an independent candidate expelled from BNP, Mohammad Nizam Uddin Kaiser, Kamrul Ahsan Babul and Rashedul Islam of Islamic Andolon.

Besides, 108 candidates are contesting for the post of general councilor and 36 candidates are contesting for the post of reserved councilor.

The total number of voters in 26 wards is 2,29,920. Among these, 1,17,092 are female voters, 1,12,826 are male voters and 2 are transgender voters.
