The death toll has risen to 34 in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda's Sonaichhari union of Chattogram.

Among the dead, five were firefighters. The death toll may rise further.

More than 400 people were burned and injured in the incident. The injured included workers, policemen and firefighters. Most of them have been taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Many were taken to private hospitals.

According to the concerned, there are more than 50,000 containers in that depot. It has been initially thought that the fire originated from an explosion of a chemical container. Late, the containers started exploding one after another. The blast shook an area three to four kilometers from the scene. The windows of nearby houses were shattered.

Meanwhile, leaves of all doctors in Chattogram have been canceled. The district civil surgeon has also directed the doctors of private hospitals to join the work in government hospitals including CMCH.
