Explosion at BM Container Depot in Ctg: Death toll rises to 16

The death toll has risen to 16 in a fire and explosion at the BM Container Depot in Sitakunda Upazila of Chattogram. Besides, more than 400 were injured. 

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Rajib Palit, assistant director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), confirmed the information to Daily Bangladesh. 

He said the burn victims are being treated in different wards of CMCH. Under the pressure of additional patients, many are being treated on the hospital floor in addition to the ward. Besides, many blood donors are needed. Those willing to donate blood have been asked to contact the ground floor of the hospital. 

Accordning to fire service sources, the fire broke out at BM Container Limited in Shitalpur area around 9:00 pm on Saturday night (June 4). On information, three units of Kumira Fire Service rushed to the spot and started work to control the fire. Later, at around 11:45 pm, fire spread from one container to another. While the fire service men and container depot staff were trying to extinguish the fire, a huge explosion went off due to the chemical container. 

The victims might have been injured due to the explosion. Locals and CMCH sources said some policemen and fire service men were also among the injured. 

At 3:30 last night, 24 units of the fire service were working to control the fire.
