After China, Italy, England and the Netherlands, cargo ships have started plying directly from Chattogram port to Spain. The first ship of the Chattogram-Spain route “MV Spica” left Chattogram for the Port of Barcelona in Spain on Friday afternoon with 700 TEUS containers full of export goods. The ship is expected to arrive in the next 20 days.
Earlier, on May 25, the ship docked at Chattogram Port Jetty.
According to Chattogram Port sources, the Swiss-based company “Commodity Supplies AG” will start operations with its three container vessels “MV Spica”, “MV Andromeda J” and “MV Music”. Each ship will leave after 15 days. The three ships will transport the exported goods directly from Chattogram to the Spanish Port of Barcelona - it will take 19 to 20 days.
“Due to the launching of direct shipping on Chattogram-Spain route, the time to send export goods to Europe will be reduced a lot,” said the concerned. The local shipping agent “Reliance Shipping and Logistics Limited” is acting as the representative of the Swiss-based company in Bangladesh.
Mohammad Omar Farooq, secretary of the Chattogram Port Authority, said It is a great achievement for us that cargo ships have started plying directly from Chattogram Port to Spain. Portugal, Slovenia and various countries in the Middle East have expressed interest in direct shipping. If they apply, we will give it a priority. This will enable our traders to export their products within the stipulated time. Along with this, our reputation will also increase in other countries.
Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice-president of BGMEA, said it was good news for us to launch cargo ships directly from Chattogram to Spain. Now it will be possible to send many products to Europe at once. This is a great opportunity for us. Moreover, it used to take a long time to send goods to Europe. Now that problem will be solved.
Last March, direct cargo ships started plying on the Chattogram-Italy route, creating opportunities for the export of goods to Europe-America, excluding transshipment ports — Singapore, Colombo, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Port Klang and Chinese ports. Besides, wastage of time and money of exporters is being prevented. At present, the Italian-based forward company “Reef Line” is operating direct ships on the Chattogram-Italy route.
