The work of the under-constructed bridge on the bank of Ichamati River in Goaldihi village of Dinajpur’s Khansama upazila has not been completed in 4 years. In such a situation, UP Chairman Liton has made a wooden bridge to reduce the suffering of the people.
According to the locals, extreme suffering has been created as the work of the under-constructed bridge on the Ichamati River has been stopped in several phases due to “various excuses”. Goaldihi union chairman Sakhawat Hossain Liton has constructed a wooden bridge at his own expense to alleviate the suffering of the people during the monsoon season.
It is learned that in 2018, Dinajpur-4 MP Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali laid the foundation stone of the bridge in the Battali area of Ichamati River in Goaldihi village. Tk 3,36,28,996 was allocated under the rural infrastructure development project. The Work on the bridge began in June 2018 and is expected to be completed in June 2021. However, in the last four years, there has been no work other than “piling”.
It is alleged that the contractor took about 50 percent of the money without completing the work of the bridge. People on both banks of the Ichamati river are suffering due to the untimely completion of work. They have to endure extreme suffering in other activities including travel.
Local chairman Jubayer Hossain said the suffering has been reduced due to the construction of the wooden bridge by the UP chairman. Earlier, we had to travel more than 10 kilometers to reach our destination. Now both time and cost will be reduced.
Harun-ur-Rashid, an LGED engineer of the upazila, said a written request has been given to the contractor to complete the work of the bridge quickly. Construction is expected to be completed soon after the floods.
Goaldihi union chairman Sakhawat Hossain Liton said the locals were suffering due to delays in the construction of the bridge. Therefore, under the TR project, I have constructed a 275-feet long wooden bridge at a cost of Tk 2.5 lakh. It has alleviated the suffering of the people.
