A local court has sentenced husband Furkan Ali to death for strangling his wife to death at Sreevardi in Sherpur.
Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the absence of the accused on Tuesday afternoon.
The convict is the son of Maidan Ali of Chellakandi area of Ranishimul union of Furkan upazila.
Furkan has been on the run since the case was filed. Meanwhile, the court acquitted the other three accused in the case, Furkan's father Maidan Ali, mother Fuletan Begum and relative Saudagar Ali as the charges against them were not proved.
According to the case details, on the night of July 2, 2011, Furkan Ali strangled his wife Zahura Begum to death, a mother of one child and daughter of Abdul Jabbar of Barageramara area of Sreevardi, for dowry. The next day, Fazlul Haque, elder brother of the deceased, filed a case against Furkan Ali, his parents, and two relatives. Subsequently, on November 20 of the same year, after the investigation, SI Nurul Amin Khan of Sreevardi police station filed a charge sheet against four persons except Azizur Rahman, a relative of Furkan. Later, only Maidan Ali appeared and faced trial, but the other three accused remained absconding.
PP Advocate Golam Kibria Bulu of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal said that Furkan Ali was sentenced to death as the charges brought under Section 11 (a) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act were proved in the final stage of the case. Besides, other accused were acquitted as the allegations of aiding and abetting were not proved under the same law.
