Five people, including a woman, were killed in two consecutive road accidents at the same place in the Safipur area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur. 

The accidents took place on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as - Renu Begum, 50, wife of Altab Hossain of Sadullapur village in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram, Mohammad Hossain, 45, son of Ramiz Uddin of South Salna in Gazipur, Sathi Akter, 25, of Sanandabari village in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur, Sharif Hossain, 28, and an unidentified person.

Salna Highway Police OC Md. Feroz Hossain said an autorickshaw was hit by a North Bengal-bound ENA Paribahan bus while crossing the highway on the east side of the Safipur flyover. The autorickshaw driver was killed on the spot. His identity was not immediately available. Three more passengers of the autorickshaw were injured. Later, the locals rescued them and took them to a local hospital. Renu, Sharif and Sathi died while undergoing treatment there.

“Five minutes after the accident, another bus of Taqwa Paribahan crushed a battery-powered rickshaw under the Safipur flyover. Injured Md. Hossain died on the way to the hospital,” he also said.

Saiful Islam, a warehouse inspector of Kaliakair Fire Service, said the fire service recovered the bodies immediately after the incident and handed it over to the highway police.
