Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, a former successful finance minister, organizer of the liberation war, the architect of the development of greater Sylhet, and a language soldier, has been laid to eternal rest with due respect, and love from people of all walks of life.

He was buried next to his parents at Raynagar family graveyard after Janaza at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa ground at 2.18 pm on Sunday. Thousands of people joined the janaza. Allama Muhibul Haque Gachabari presided over the janaza namaz.

Muhith's younger brother Foreign Minister spoke briefly before the burial. Prominent personalities including AK Abdul Momen and Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Ariful Haque Chowdhury attended the janaza. At this time, the speakers broke down in tears while remembering Muhith.

Earlier, Muhith's body was taken to the central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet on Sunday afternoon to pay homage to people of all walks of life. At this time a sad atmosphere was created there. People from different walks of life, including Awami League leaders and activists, started coming to the Shaheed Minar in the morning to pay homage to Muhith. Earlier, a tribute stage was made of black cloth.

First, a vigilante team of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) paid state honors to Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, a linguist and organizer of the Liberation War. After one-minute silence was observed.

Muhith's younger brother then paid tribute to the coffin of the body. Local MPs and Awami League leaders including AK Abdul Momen, Planning Minister MA Mannan, Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury also paid homage.

Heads of various government agencies, police, and senior officials of the administration paid their respects. Besides, tributes were paid on behalf of various social, cultural, political, and professional organizations. The area around the central Shaheed Minar became crowded to pay homage. The people of Sylhet bid farewell with flowers and tears.

Earlier, the coffin of former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was taken to his residence Hafiz Complex at Dhopa Dighirpar at around 9.45 pm on Saturday. 

AMA Muhith breathed his last at 12:56 am on Saturday at the United Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 88.
