Nor’wester washes away 9 villages in just 5min, schoolgirl killed

In Dinajpur’s Parbatipur, 9 villages were washed away by a nor’wester in just 5 minutes. The houses were destroyed by the storm. Thousands of trees have been uprooted. The villages have been suffering from power outages after the storm.

It is learned that a sixth-grader madrasa student named Umme Kulsum was killed when the walls of her house collapsed during the storm. Besides, at least 50 people, including women and children, were injured in the nor’wester. 

The nor’wester swept over Harirampur UP of the upazila around 9:15 pm on Tuesday. The storm was accompanied by hails. The storm crossed over Rampur, Hamidpur UP and hit Harirampur UP severely. More than 500 villages of these unions were washed away.

The deceased Umme Kulsum, daughter of Shawkat Ali of Munsipara village of the UP, is a student of the local Gurguri Baharul Uloom Dakhil Madrasa.

Local MP and former minister Advocate Mostafizur Rahman visited the storm-prone villages at 8 am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the police and fire service started rescue operations immediately after the storm. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Ismail, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Pritam Saha and OC Imam Zafar rushed to Harirampur. Local UP chairman Mozahedul Islam Sohag accompanied them at the time. Later, at around 1 am, UNO handed over Tk 25,000 to the father of the slain student. 

UP Chairman Mozahedul Islam Sohag said more than 500 houses were completely destroyed in the storm. About 50 people were injured. The critically injured have been admitted to Rangpur and Phulbari hospitals. Families who have taken shelter under the open sky after the storm have been provided Sehri at night.

UNO Muhammad Ismail said work has been started since morning to assess the damage caused by the storm. One madrasa student was killed in the storm. Several cattle died. Crops have been severely damaged. Every department including the medical team is working. All kinds of assistance will be provided by the administration.
