Mitu murder: Husband Babul Akhter denied bail in own case

A court in Chattogram today has denied the bail petition of former SP Babul Akhter in a case filed by himself in the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman denied bail on Tuesday afternoon.
Confirming the matter, Metropolitan Court PP Mohammad Fakhruddin Chowdhury said Babul Akhter’s bail petition was filed in the case filed by himself. After hearing both sides, the court denied it.
Earlier, on December 30, PBI Chattogram Metro Inspector Abu Jafar Mohammad Omar Faruque, the investigating officer in the case, sought the arrest of Babul Akhter in the case. Later on January 9, the court ordered his arrest.
Besides, on November 14, Babul Akhter’s lawyer appealed for a change in investigating agency in the case. The court dismissed the petition on January 19, one day later the hearing.
On June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, the wife of the then SP Babul Akter, was brutally shot and stabbed on the way to pick up her son from the school bus on OR Nizam Road near GEC junction in the city.
Babul Akhter filed a murder case with the Panchlaish police station over the incident. The case was being investigated by the city DB police. Later in January last year, the PBI got the responsibility of investigating the case on the order of the court.
After that, the nature of the case starts changing. Various aspects of Babul Akhtar’s involvement in the murder of his wife are coming up in the PBI investigation. On May 10 last year, Babul Akhter was summoned to the PBI Chattogram Metro office for questioning as a plaintiff in the case. The PBI then took him into custody.
Later on May 12, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case against eight people with the city’s Panchlaish police station with Babul Akter as the prime accused.
The other accused in the case are – Kamrul Islam Sikder alias Musa, Ehtesamul Haque Bhola, Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Khairul Islam Kalu, Saidul Islam Sikder alias Sakku and Shahjahan Mia.
