DU Professor Saida Gaffar murder accused Anarul Islam
A Dhaka court today granted a three-day remand to Anarul Islam, who was arrested in connection with the murder of retired Dhaka University (DU) professor Saida Gaffar.
Anarul was produced before Gazipur Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court-2 on Saturday afternoon seeking a 10-day remand.
Following the hearing, Judge Mehedi Pavel Sweet granted a three-day remand to Anarul, the sole accused in the case.
Gazipur Metropolitan Kashimpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubey Khoda said the arrested Anarul ias the son of Ansar Ali of Burjug Jamalpur village under Sadullahpur police station in Gaibandha. After killing Professor Saida Gaffar, he fled to his village home in Gaibandha. Anarul Islam initially confessed to the murder during preliminary interrogation. However, he will be placed on remand and questioned to find out the motive behind the killings, who else was involved and what items he looted from the victim's home.
Gazipur Metropolitan Detective Police Inspector Sanwar Jahan said Anarul Islam spent the night at his father-in-law's Palash house in Gaibandha after the murder. The next day he moved to his village home Sadullapur. After receiving information from secret sources, two teams of Detective Police and Thana Police detected the location of the accused through modern technology. Later, police raided Sadullapur area of Gaibandha and arrested Anarul when he tried to flee from Jaulia Bazar of Sadullapur Police Station by an autorickshaw.
A button mobile, an Android mobile set used by the slain Professor Saida Gaffar, and Tk2,650 were recovered from him.
Meanwhile, the autopsy of Professor Saida Gaffar's body was completed at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur on Friday afternoon. Later her relatives took the body to Dhaka. After Janaza in Dhaka at night, she was buried at the Martyred Intellectual Graveyeard in Mirpur.
