Construction worker kills DU Professor Saida Gaffar

Body of a retired professor Saida Gaffar of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University was recovered from a jungle at Kashimpur in Gazipur three days after she went missing.

Professor Saida's body was recovered from a jungle a short distance from his home on Friday morning. She had been missing since last Tuesday.

Kashimpur Police Station OC Mahbub A Khoda said a construction worker named Anwar Hossain has been arrested in connection with the murder of Professor Saida Gaffar. Anwar was involved in the construction of Professor Saida's house. According to him, the body of Saida Gaffar was recovered in the morning.

It is learned that Professor Saida Gaffar went missing from her residence three days ago. She used to live in a rented house adjacent to a housing project in Gazipur. Her body was recovered by police on Friday morning. She was building a house nearby. One of his daughters came from Dhaka last Tuesday and filed a general diary (GD) with the police stating that she could not find her mother. The police then started an investigation. At one stage, Anwar, a house construction worker, was detained and questioned as a suspect. According to his information, the body was recovered from the forest at around 10 am, a short distance from the house of Professor Saida Gaffar.

OC Mahbub-e-Khoda said, "Anwar along with his accomplices looted the house of the slain professor on January 11 and strangled her. Later she was thrown into a forest some distance from Mirzabari."

The OC said that Tk 60 to 70 thousand had been looted from the house of Professor Saida Gaffar. Attempts are also being made to arrest others involved in the killings. Body sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for autopsy. 

Dhaka University Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani said Professor Saida Gaffar was a professor at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science. She had been living a retired life for several years.
