41 injured in explosion while inflating balloon in Cumilla

At least 41 people were injured when a gas cylinder exploded while inflating a balloon at Nangalkot in Cumilla.

Among the injured, 38 seriously injured were referred to Cumilla, of them, 23 are undergoing treatment at Cumilla Medical College Hospital (CUMC), said CUMC civil surgeon Mir Mubarak Hossain.

The rest are undergoing treatment at other places including Cumilla General (Sadar) Hospital.

It is learned that a teenager tried to inflate a balloon by connecting it to a gas cylinder at Birulia village of the upazila in the evening on Thursday. At that time, the children of the house were gathered. Later, the cylinder was suddenly exploded. Many of the injured got hit on their heads and eyes. In this incident, a house was destroyed. 

Alamgir Hossain, chairman of Moukara UP, said a youth named Anwar from Birulia village had been making helium gas-filled balloons for several years. “He makes his own gas using market gas, various medicines and lime. Besides, the cylinder was quite old. The whole process of making his balloon was dangerous,” he also said.

Moukara UP chairman added that more than 100 families were living in the house where the balloons were being filled with gas. Children were playing nearby at the time of the blast. As a result, they are in critical condition.

Nangalkot Upazila Health Officer Dev Das Dev said 41 patients were admitted to Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex. No one died at the hospital so far. However, as the condition of 36 people was critical, they were referred to Cumilla after first aid. Three are undergoing treatment here.

Civil Surgeon Mir Mubarak Hossain said the condition of two of the injured was critical.
