Man gets life-term for beating wife to death

Convicted Abul Kalam
A local court has sentenced Abul Kalam to life imprisonment for killing his wife. At that time, he was fined Tk 50,000 in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.
District and Sessions Judge Ehsanul Haque delivered the verdict on Monday. The convicted Kalam is the son of late Maqbool Ali of ward 3 of Baishphandi Thanthajiri in Ghumdhum union of Naikhyangchhari upazila. His wife Monowara Begum is the daughter of Syed Alam of the same area.
According to court sources, on the morning of March 17, 2013. Abul Kalam hit his second wife Monowara Begum with a stick in the head following a family quarrel at his residence, leaving Monowara dead. The convict went to the run following the incident. Monwara Begum's father Syed Alam filed a case with Naikhyangchhari Police Station on March 18. On 15 October 2014, the police charged Abul Kalam and submitted the final report.
Since the accused has been absconding since the beginning of the case, SDL was appointed by the court for the accused. The court, after taking testimony of 11 witnesses, fixed the date for hearing the arguments of the case. The accused later surrendered voluntarily to the court on November 3 during the argument hearing of the case and sought bail. Later, the court denied bail and sent him to jail. The court passed the verdict after examining four defense witnesses in the case.
Bedarul Alam, administrative officer (in-charge) of Bandarban District and Sessions Judge's Court, said accused Abul Kalam was present in the court when the verdict was announced. Meanwhile, the plaintiff Monowara Begum's father Syed Alam expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
