Fire at launch in Meghna river

A passenger launch named MV Surovi-9 has caught fire on the Meghna river in Chandpur. The fire broke out around 12:00 am on Saturday in the Mohanpur area of Matlab North.
Launch crews were able to bring the fire under control before it spread to the launch. On information, the fire service reached the spot.
It has been reported that the launch named MV Surovi-9 was going to Barishal from Dhaka. While passing Mohanpur area around 12:00 am, a fire broke out at the engine room of the launch.
Hundreds of passengers on the launch panicked at the time. However, no major casualties were reported as the launch staff doused the fire in a short time.
BIWTA Deputy Director Md Kaysarul Islam said the launch staff was able to extinguish the fire in a short time. Passengers are safe now and the launch is anchored in Mohanpur area. However, the launch will not be allowed to go to Barishal due to the risk of another accident. Arrangements will be made for passengers to reach their destination on another launch.
