Six people have been killed in five districts in the fifth phase of the UP election, said Election Commission (EC) Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker.

He said this at a press conference after the UP polls at the media center of Election Building in Agargaon on Wednesday evening.

Humayun Kabir Khandaker said, "It is sad that one died in Manikganj, one in Chattogram, one in Bogura, one in Gaibandha and two in Chandpur. Candidates must take responsibility for those who have died. He urged the candidates not to be emotional."

He said the district administration had arrested two returning officers at Kajalsar in Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet for illegal activities.

The EC secretary said 70 percent of the votes were expected to be cast. Voting has been postponed in 9 centers for irregularities.

The fifth phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections to 707 UPs ended peacefully except a couple of isolated incidents.
