Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, the main accused in a case filed over gang-rape to a tourist by taking her husband and child hostage in Cox’s Bazar. With this, the number of arrestees in the rape case stood at five.

The main accused Ashiqul Islam Ashiq was detained from Madaripur, RAB’s legal and media wing said on Sunday evening. 

Meanwhile, today (Monday, December 27), Cox’s Bazar Zone Superintendent of Police Zillur Rahman informed the arrest of the four remaining accused. 

The four arrestees are – Rezaul Karim, 25, son of Abul Kashem, Mamunur Rashid, 26, son of late Muktar Ahmed and Mehedi Hasan, 21, son of late Saleh Ahmed. Among them are three accused in the case and one was their accomplices.

On Wednesday (December 22) morning, the victim went to Cox’s Bazar with her husband and eight-month-old child from Dhaka. In the afternoon, she went for a walk with her family at Labani Point on the beach. At that time, his husband pushed a man named Ashiq while they were walking down the sand bed towards the water. 

Later, Ashiq and his accomplices took the woman away by a CNG in the evening over the altercation. Three people including Ashiq, the main accused in the case, took the woman in a tea shop and raped her. She was later taken to a resort named ‘Zia Guest Inn’ at Kalatali in Cox’s Bazar.

It is also learned that the rapists raped her again after taking drugs inside the ‘Zia Guest Inn’ hotel. Later, they left the woman in the hotel room and closed the door from the outside. They also threatened to kill the woman’s husband and child if she tells anyone about these incidents. 

The woman later opened the door with the help of a man and called 999. From there, the woman was told to go to the police station and file a GD. The victim then called RAB-15 with the number from a signboard outside the hotel room. Later, RAB reached the spot and rescued her.

The victim’s husband filed a case with the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station on Thursday night (December 23), accusing four persons including Ashiqul Islam Ashiq of Baharchhara area in Cox’s Bazar city. 

Besides, three persons have been made anonymous accused. The other accused in the case are – Ashiq’s two associates Israfil Khuda Joy, Mehedi Hasan Babu and ‘Zia Guest Inn’ hotel manager Riaz Uddin Choton.
