Jhalokati launch fire: Death toll rises to 39

The death toll has risen to 39 in a fire that broke out on the Borguna-bound MV Abhijan-10 launch from Dhaka on the Sugandha river in Jhalokati in the early hours of Friday.  

It has been reported that the fire originated around 3:00 am from the launches' engine room.

Confirming the information, Jhalokati Fire Service Deputy Director Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan said that charred bodies of 39 people have been recovered so far. More than 100 passengers were burnt in the incident. The death toll might increase further.  

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. Fire service members are conducting rescue operations. However, the fire was brought under control. 

Meanwhile, 80-90 people, who have sustained burn injuries in the fire are being treated at various hospitals in Barishal, Jhalokati and surrounding areas. 

According to local sources, the launch MV Abhiyan-10 was heading towards Borguna from Dhaka. Around 3:00 am, a fire broke at the moving launch at Diakul area on the Sugandha river in Jhalokati. Later, the fire spread soon to the whole launch. Many of the passengers saved themselves by jumping in the river.
