Around 200 families of Gatirgheri and Hariharpur villages in Khulna's Koyra upazila have been flooded as embankments breached due to storm surges caused by cyclone Jawad.

Due to the negligence of the contractor, the embankment of the Water Development Board at Hariharpur village in North Bedkashi UP broke and water entered the locality.

Locals allege that on May 26, the embankment of Hariharpur village was flooded due to cyclone Yash. But a week ago, the working contractor filled the Geo tube with sand and released the water. However, due to cyclone Jawad, the tidal waters in the Shakberia River rose again and broke into the dam again on Saturday night, inundating two villages, Hariharpur and Gatirgheri.

Dhires Mahot, a local, said, “We have been underwater for about seven months due to Shakberia river dam levee, which breaks due to cyclone Yash. A few weeks ago, the contractor filled the Geo tube with sand and released water. But later, as no more soil work was done, the dam broke through that place and flooded again due to the tidal wave created by cyclone Jawad.

UP member Harshit Kumar Mandal said that Hariharpur and Gantirgheri villages were inundated again on Saturday night as the contractor company had somehow released the water a week ago but did not do the soil work.

Badshah Mia, a representative of Messrs Ziaur Traders, denied the allegations, saying "We are doing the right thing. However, due to the rising tide in the river, the soil has been removed from the bottom of the geo-tube and the area has been flooded again. Work will resume from Monday. Water can be reduced in 2-4 days."

Satkhira Division-2 Assistant Engineer SM Mashiul Abedin said that Messrs Ziaul Traders had recently stopped the flow of water through sand in the Geo Tube at that place. But the tidal waters in the Kopotaksh River have risen and the soil has been removed from the bottom of the geo-bag and flooded again. However, work will start in that place in a few days.

UNO Animesh Biswas said the river water had entered the locality by breaking the embankment at a place in Hariharpur village of Uttar Bedkashi UP. As a result, Hariharpur and Gatirgheri villages have been flooded.
