Cumilla councilor murder: 2 accused killed in gunfight

Two accused in the murder case of Cumilla City Corporation ward councilor Syed Mohammad Sohel, were killed in a gunfight with law enforcers in the early hours of Tuesday. 

The incident took place in Sangraish area around 12:15 am. The deceased have been identified as Sabbir Hossain, son of Rafiq Miah of Sujanagar area and Sajan, son of Kakon Miah of Sangraish area.  

Confirming the matter, Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station OC Anwarul Azim said tipped off, a team of DB and Thana police carried out raids in Sangraish and Nabagram areas to arrest the accused. When the law enforcers reached near the embankment of Gomti river in Sangraish, the miscreants opened fire randomly on the police, prompting them to fire back for selfe defense. At one stage during the shootings, some of the accused escaped. 

He said the two were later found lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. They were rescued and taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead. 

Three policemen were injured in the attack. The injured have been shifted to police hospital for better treatment.

A 7.65 pistol, a pipe gun, fresh bullet, bullet shells and cartridge shells were recovered from the scene, police said.
