AL’s Merina Jahan Kabita wins Sirajganj-6 by huge margin

The ruling Awami League candidate Professor Merina Jahan Kabita has been elected unofficially in the by-election of Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency with 1,10,580 votes.

Professor Merina Jahan Kabita’s nearest rival Jatiya Party’s Mokhtar Hossian got 535 votes and independent candidate Advocate Humayun Kabir got 343 votes.

Rajshahi Divisional Election Officer Faridul Islam announced the results unofficially from the election control room of Shahjadpur Upazila Parishad’s hall at around 9:30 pm on Tuesday after the voting was held from 8 am to 4 pm.

Shahjadpur UNO Shah Md. Shamsuzzoha, Sirajganj District Election Officer Shahidul Islam, Shahjadpur Upazila Election Officer Jahangir Hossain and others were present at the time.

Voters exercised their votes through EVMs in 160 polling stations.

Hasibur Rahman Shawpan, MP of Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency, died of coronavirus on September 2. The Election Commission later declared the seat vacant.
