Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, along with his wife, has contracted Covid-19. They were hospitalized on Wednesday night at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) in the capital.

The Supreme Court sources informed this on Thursday.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique is currently treated at BSMMU’s VIP cabin while Hasan Foez Siddique’s wife was admitted to the same hospital on Thursday.

It is learned that both of them are currently healthy. A medical board will meet to discuss their conditions at 12 pm today (Thursday, January 20).

Noted that Justice Hasan Foez Siddique of the Appellate Division has been appointed as the 23rd Chief Justice of the country. President M Abdul Hamid made the appointment as per the power of Article 95 (1) of the Constitution. The appointment was effective from the day of taking an oath. The Ministry of Law had issued a notification regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has replaced Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain. Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has been the Chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission since April 30, 2015.

President M Abdul Hamid on December 31 administered the oath of office to Hasan Foez Siddique as the 23rd Chief Justice a day after signing his appointment. 

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was born on September 26, 1956, in Ramanathpur village of Khoksa upazila in Kushtia. After graduating from Dhaka University (DU), he joined the legal profession after obtaining a law degree.

Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was enrolled as an advocate of the District Court on August 21, 1981. He was enrolled at the High Court Division on September 4, 1983, and at the Supreme Court on May 27, 1999.

He acted as Legal Advisor to Khulna City Corporation, Kushtia Municipality, Jalalabad Gas Transmission Company and Chief Law Adviser of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Besides, he worked as an Additional Attorney General for Bangladesh.

Justice Siddique was elevated as Judge of the High Court Division on March 25, 2009, and as a Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on March 31, 2013.
