Four policemen including SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, In-charge of Bandarbazar police outpost were suspended and three others have withdrawn over the death of a youth in police custody at Bandar Bazar police outpost, Sylhet.

A source in the Sylhet Metropolitan Police confirmed the matter.

Earlier on Sunday (October 11), deceased relatives alleged that Raihan Uddin was killed in police torture. The deceased Raihan Uddin identified as the son of Rafiqul Islam of Neharipara of Sylhet.

Police claim that Raihan was beaten to death by mob during the snatching. However, family members of the deceased alleged that the police arrested and tortured Raihan to death. The Sylhet Metropolitan Police has formed an investigation committee based on the family's allegations.

Meanwhile, the wife of the dead Raihan has filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station on Sunday night.

Raihan's mother Salma Begum and uncle Habibullah said Raihan used to work in the chamber of Dr. Abdul Gaffar in the stadium market at Rikabi Bazar. Raihan is the father of a child.

Last Saturday night, Raihan was late returning home from work, so his wife phoned him at around 10 pm. Later, around 4 am, Raihan called his mother's mobile phone from an unknown number and said that he had been taken to the Bandarbazar police outpost and would be released if he paid Tk 10,000.

Raihan's mother sent his uncle Habibullah to the Bandarbazar police outpost with Tk5,000 immediately after the Fajr prayers. At that time, a policeman told Habibullah, 'You are supposed to bring Tk 10,000, why did you bring Tk5,000 only, now go, Raihan is sleeping.

The policeman asked Habibullah to come at 9am as the officer who arrested Raihan was not in the outpost then. He will come around 9 in the morning. According to him, Habibullah went to the outpost again at 9 am. But the Police personnel stationed at the outpost at the time said Raihan had been sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital as he was ill. Habibullah then rushed to Osmani Hospital and found Raihan dead at the hospital morgue. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the family around 4 pm on Sunday.
