The World Mental Health Day-2021 is being observed on Sunday in the country like elsewhere across the world.
The day is observed every year on October 10 across the world with various programmes for raising awareness and spreading education about mental health issues.
This year, the main theme of the day is 'Mental Health in an unequal World'.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s mental health. Some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected. And services for mental, neurological and substance use disorders have been significantly disrupted," the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages. Both the president and the premier wished The 'World Mental Health Day-2021' a success.
The government and non-government organizations have taken programmes including seminars and discussions to mark the day.
World Mental Health Day was first observed on October 10, 1992 as an annual activity of World Federation for Mental Health.
The day initially did not have a specific theme and its aim was to promote mental health advocacy and educating the public on relevant issues. Seeing the popularity of the campaign, in 1994 for the first time a theme for the day was used which was “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World.”
