World Coconut Day is celebrating all over the country today (Thursday, September 2). The Asian Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) – formed with a total of 18 countries including India – has decided to celebrate the day every year since 2009. The main goal of the day is to strengthen a country’s financial system through the development of the coconut industry.
Besides the differences in nutritional value, there are also differences in the use of coconut. Coconut water is quite nutritious – contains elements like Vitamin C, Potassium, Magnesium – which helps control human hypertension.
Coconut is also beneficial for the heart as it is fat-free. Even it helps to lose weight. The oil made from coconut is quite nutritious for hair. coconut milk is also very healthy. Vegetarians meet their bodies’ nutritional needs through coconut milk.
Another goal of Coconut Day is to show the importance of coconut around the world. Coconut is not only beneficial as a food item, it is also a means of alleviating poverty. Today, millions of people in different states of India are making a living by cultivating coconut. They are also used in various religious festivals (Hindus). The day is celebrated in Bangalore, India – a big festival for them.
A 30-feet high Ganesha figure was made of around 9,000 coconuts that day. Worship is organized. Later, all the coconuts are distributed among the poor at the end of the festival.
The day is also celebrated in schools in other states of India, including Kerala. The students of the school draw pictures of coconuts, decorate the classroom and schoolyard with their paintings. They also make various things from coconut leaves and coconut shells, such as floor mats, bags, fans, baskets, playrooms, dolls, etc.
Bags made of coconut shells can be used instead of polythene bags. There are many countries in the world where the only source of income is the ‘coconut business’. However, the demand for coconut is very low in the world, as a result, the development of the coconut industry is also very slow. The day is celebrated to raise awareness among the people and improve the industry.
