Work on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line underway in full swing

The work on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Railway Extension project is underway in full swing. 47 percent of the work of this project has already been completed. If this trend of work continues, this route will be suitable for rail movement by June next year. 

According to the relevant sources, the progress of soil-filling work for the construction of the railway line has progressed about 65 percent. Out of 9 station buildings of the project, the construction work of 5 has been 20 percent completed. Out of 145 culverts, 70 have been completed. Work on 30 culverts is in full swing. Of the 39 bridges, 30 are 80 percent completed.

Meanwhile, the work of the ultramodern iconic building under construction in Cox’s Bazar has been completed by 20 percent. Two underpasses are being constructed for the movement of elephants inside the forest. The work of constructing the overpass is also going on fast.

Mofizur Rahman, director of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Railway Extension project, said the overall progress of the project has been 47 percent completed till December. “Hopefully, it will be suitable for rail movement by June next year.”

He added that the monsoon season after the outbreak of COVID had a major impact on the pace of work on the project. However, work has started in full swing from November last year.

It is to be mentioned that the government took initiative to build a direct railway line from Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar to facilitate the communication system of the tourist city of Cox’s Bazar with the rest of the country.

The cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 18,034.47 crore with the joint funding of the Bangladesh Government and ADB. Following the survey, the government approved the DPP on 6 July 2020 for the construction of the new railway line. The Work on the project officially started in March 2018.

According to the concerned, if the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line is suitable, it will bring a groundbreaking change in the communication system of the country. This will make it very easy to travel from Dhaka to Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. The socio-economic condition of this region will also improve.
