The women have been making significant contributions to the national economy as the womenfolk make up 80 percent of workers in the readymade garment (RMG) industry which has over 34 percent contribution to the country’s GDP.

This was stated by State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak at a seminar on “The role of women in creating the environment for entrepreneur culture and innovation” arranged by Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (iDEA) Project at ICT tower in the capital.

“ICT Division has been implementing different projects, including IDEA and women empowerment, for encouraging the women to flourish their innovative ideas through entrepreneurship at home and abroad,” he said.

Deputy Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Habibun Nahar, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Dr Rubana Huq, Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Executive Director Partho Pratim Deb addressed the seminar. IDEA Project Director Mujibul Haque chaired it.

Palak said there are 5,865 union digital centers in the country now and a woman is working along with a man in each UDC.

Because of these initiatives of the government, it has been possible to create over 10,500 women entrepreneurs in 21 districts in the last several years.
