The High Court today issued a rule asking why 83 overseas workers from Vietnam and Qatar should not be directed to be released. Those concerned, including the Home Ministry secretary, have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam came up with the rule following a writ petition filed as public interest litigation by Supreme Court lawyer Salah Uddin Reagan on September 13.

Earlier, on September 13, lawyer Salauddin Reagan filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking the release of a total of 83 workers, including 81  Vietnam returnees and two Qatar returnees.

On September 1, the court ordered to send to jail 83 overseas returnees from Vietnam and Qatar.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Satyabrata Sikdar sent them to jail as they were arrested under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder ordered them to be sent to jail. The investigating officer requested to keep them in jail till the investigation of the case is completed. Following the appeal, the judge ordered them to be sent to jail.

The police showed them arrest at the end of the official quarantine that morning. Turag Police Station OC Nurul Mottakin said that these expatriates went to the two countries and got involved in crime. The workers were deported on August 18 last following their imprisonment in Qatar and Vietnam over their involvement in criminal offences.
