State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the ongoing strike of water transport workers will be resolved within today.

He told reporters after a meeting with the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami at the Secretariat on Thursday.

He said the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) under the Ministry of Shipping and the Department of Shipping had discussed with the boat owners and workers over the ongoing strike of water transport workers. This discussion is ongoing. It will be resolved today.

The state minister said the main demand of the water transport workers was food allowance. It is certainly their fair claim. There is no doubt about it. Even before this the workers went on strike, we have resolved it through discussion.

He said the workers were helpless. They earn their livelihood through hard work. The employer-worker relationship should be friendly and cordial. We will solve this by coordinating with the owners and workers.

Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is moving forward by coordinating everything. Many complex problems are being solved during this government. The government has that ability. We will take the country forward by coordinating.
