The bridge over the river flowing through Katabari village of Saguna UP in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj has not been built in 50 years. Thousands of people on the east and west banks of Katabari village are counting down days for a bridge!
Talking to the villagers, it is learned that the Gomani River flows through the middle of Katabari village and this river has become a “nightmare” for the locals. Especially if a woman has labor pains or if anyone has to take a dying patient to the hospital, they have to go through various difficulties. Even schoolgoing students become the victims of this suffering. However, the suffering has increased the most in the rainy season.
Demanding the construction of the bridge, the locals said If a bridge is built here, on the one hand, more than 500 students from different educational institutions of the area will be able to travel safely, on the other hand, the communication system, hat bazaar, infrastructural development and expansion of rural trade and commerce will take place.
However, their demands have not been met in 50 years.
Sirajul Haque, a resident of Katabari village and a school teacher, said thousands of people in the village cultivate various vegetables. For a long time, the village has been divided into two parts due to the river in the middle. Having a bridge will change the lives of the residents here. He demanded the construction of a bridge and two kilometers of paved road.
Local UP member Md. Moni said it is the only “neglected village” in the upazila. However, a lot of vegetables are produced here which are sold in different parts of the country. But if there was a bridge, the farmers of the area would get the “right price” for their produce.
“We have informed the higher authorities about paving the road and a bridge. The work will start when the instruction comes,” said Md. Anwar Hossain, LGED Assistant Engineer of Tarash upazila.
