Dhaka WASA (Water Supply & Sewerage Authority) has handed over the authority of 26 canals in Dhaka to Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to solve the longstanding waterlogging problem in the capital.
The two City Corporations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WASA in this regard at Hotel Inter-Continental in the capital on Thursday.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tazul Islam was present at the programme as the chief guest.
The Minister said the canals in the Dhaka city were supervised by the then Dhaka Municipal Corporation before 1988. But the exact reason why the responsibility of the canals shifted to Dhaka WASA is unknown. So there was a lot of lack of coordination in maintenance of the canals.
Now the responsibility of 26 canals in Dhaka have been handed over from WASA to DNCC and DSCC, Tazul Islam said, adding that the two city corporations will be responsible for maintenance of the canals as per the law.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh were present as special guests at the function presided over by Local Government Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed.
