Voting in 204 UPs, 2 municipalities, Lakshmipur-2 by-polls

By-elections in Lakshmipur-2 constituency and two municipalities and the first phase voting in 204 UPs has been completed. Now the vote-counting underway.
Earlier, the polling was held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm simultaneously on Monday.
EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) voting has taken place in 20 out of 204 Union Parishads (UPs). The remaining 164 were voted on by ballot.
At first, the Election Commission (EC) announced the polling schedule in 367 UPs, however, the voting in 183 UPs was postponed due to the high prevalence of coronavirus infection.
EC joint secretary Asaduzzaman told the media that elections were held in 204 UPs in 41 upazilas of 13 districts today. In the first phase of the election, 859 candidates contested for the post of chairman, 2,154 for the post of reserved member and 6,960 for the post of general member. “28 of them have already been elected chairman without contest,” he added.
More than 45,000 members of law enforcement have served in the UPs. Meanwhile, besides the UPs, by-elections of Lakshmipur-2 parliamentary constituency, municipality polls in Jhalokati and Dinajpur’s Setabganj have been held today.
