A court in Dhaka will pronounce its verdict today against the accused Majnu in Dhaka University student rape case.
Earlier on Thursday, Judge Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar of Dhaka’s Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-7 fixed Thursday to deliver its verdict in the case after a hearing.
If the verdict is announced on Thursday, the trial of the case will end in just 13 working days. Meanwhile, the plaintiff in the case and the father of the rape victim have demanded the maximum punishment for the accused Majnu in the verdict.
“We are expecting the maximum punishment of the accused Majnu. Since the government has enacted the death penalty as the maximum punishment in rape cases, so we want the death sentence of the accused,” said the plaintiff of the case, however, the lawyer of the accused claims that Majnu will be “acquitted” from the case.
Earlier on March 16, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)submitted a charge-sheet against Majnu to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court.
On January 5 this year, a DU student was raped in Kurmitola while she was going to her friend’s house around 7:30 pm. The next day, the girl’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station, accusing unknown people.
Later, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 30-year-old Majnu from Dhaka's Shewra area on January 8.
