The people of Krishner Char lost their all resources in the erosion of the Someshwari River. After losing everything, many took shelter in the verandah of Krishnachar school and somehow spent days with family and loved ones there. Residents of the Krishner Char Ashrayan Project have performed Eid prayers wearing old and torn clothes. Yet they have no grief. They celebrated the first Eid with family in a dream house on the occasion of Mujib Borsho which is a different kind of joy and happiness to them.

While visiting the Ashrayan Project area on Wednesday, it was seen that there is no shortage of Eid joy among the residents of the project although they have no new clothes, delicious food. Being able to celebrate Eid at home is like a dream for them.

In pursuance of the Prime Minister’s directive of “Mujib Borsher Ongikar - Griho Hobe Sobar” (Mujib Borsho Promise - Home for All), 80 families of 7 UP in Durgapur Upazila were given a semi-pucca house with two rooms with two Satak of land. There is a flood of joy among the beneficiaries of being able to celebrate Eid for the first time in this house.

Day laborer Akbar Hossain cannot walk properly due to illness. He had problems with his legs due to an accident five years ago. He was sheltered in the house of another with his wife and children. He could not afford to buy land and build a house. “Before, we got scared whenever the storm came. Now, we don’t have any fear. The government has benefited poor people like us with pucca houses. Today we are very happy to be able to celebrate Eid with everyone in this house,” he said.

Upazila project implementation officer Md. Saiful Islam said 80 families in the upazila have been given one house each in two phases. Proposals for 50 more houses have been sent. “We think getting the houses will improve the social status and standard of living of this community,” he added.
