The High Court on Wednesday said that vehicles without valid fitness documents would not be allowed to ply the roads.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order during the hearing of a suo moto (voluntary) rule issued by this court last year.

Earlier in the day, the authorities of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) submitted a report before the HC bench. After placing the report, lawyer Rafiul Islam stood for the BRTA while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik, Assistant Attorney General Helena Begum represented the state in the court.

Later, lawyer Rafiul Islam said that the court said no vehicles without valid fitness documents will be allowed to ply the roads. The court also wanted to know from the authorities concerned how the unfit vehicles were still operating.

BRTA and Inspector General of Police (IGP) have been asked to inform the court on February 17 about their action against the unfit vehicles. The court also fixed February 17 for passing an order on this issue.

According to the BRTA report, only 1,65,764 vehicles, among 4,58,359, renewed their fitness certificates across the country. Therefore, 2,92,595 vehicles without valid fitness documents are running on the roads till December 30 last year.

Earlier on October 23 last year, the HC directed the authorities concerned to take necessary steps so that vehicles without valid fitness documents cannot get fuel from any filling station.
